Market Adoption of SGML

SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language (language, text) Standard Generalized Markup Language - (SGML) A generic markup language for representing documents. SGML is an International Standard that describes the relationship between a document's content and its structure. ) is the leading international standard (ISO 8879) for document interchange and is an important component in the information architecture being implemented today by a wide variety of enterprises and industries. Historically, demand for SGML documents has been particularly strong in the aerospace, automotive, electronic, pharmaceutical and telecommunications industries. Today, mainstream companies of all sizes are increasingly realizing the productivity gains that are possible when content structure is applied to documents. Companies such as Philips, Hewlett-Packard and Bell Northern Research use Frame's SGML tools to leverage their valuable corporate data and reduce rising information management costs.

"SGML is increasingly being adopted in both the public and private sector," commented Mary LaPlante, executive director of SGML Open. "Frame's introduction of FrameMaker+SGML provides additional options for the growing number of enterprises seeking to implement SGML solutions."

Frame Technology is a founding member of SGML Open, a consortium of vendors which supply SGML products and services.

Frame's Suite of SGML Products

Frame's strategy is to provide a suite of products that allow enterprises to realize the advantages of SGML in all aspects of their document information activities. In addition to FrameMaker+SGML for interactive SGML authoring, Frame also offers SGML Composer for SGML batch composition.

SGML Composer is a high-speed batch composition system which reads SGML document instances, DTDs and FOSI (Family Online Safety Institute, Washington, DC, www.fosi.org) An international, non-profit organization launched in 2007 to promote online safety awareness for children, while protecting freedom of speech and expression on the Internet.  (Formatting Output Specification Instance (text, standard) Formatting Output Specification Instance - (FOSI) An old SGML DTD standard for document management in the US military, to be replaced (soon after Oct 1996?) by the ISO standard DSSSL. ) files and then automatically builds fully paginated documents.
