Pumas are three time winners of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, claiming their most recent title over a decade ago in 1989.

Deportivo Saprissa, a two time CONCACAF Cup champion ('93, '95) and 2004 finalist, dispensed of any hopes for an all Mexican Champions' Cup final when they defeated CF Monterrey in penalty kicks (5-3) at the conclusion of their semifinal match played April 14. Trailing at the half, Deportivo found their equalizer in a penalty kick from Ronald Gomez in the 71st minute. Tied 1-1 (3-3 aggregate) at the end of extra time, the game was decided on penalty kicks. Deportivo Saprissa's break came when goalkeeper Jose Francisco Porras saved the shot by CF Monterrey's Walter Erviti, giving Deportivo a one goal advantage. It was Ronald Gomez, who converted his second penalty kick of the day, clinching the victory for Deportivo Saprissa.
