Located on the West Side of Midtown Manhattan, the Helena is a 37-story building with 580 studio, one and two bedroom rental apartments that offer residents high performance green technologies not available in typical residential buildings. The Helena's design is a bold reinvention of the conventional residential high-rise, boasting floor to ceiling glass, wrap-around windows and sleek metal panels.

The AIA initiated the invitation for design submissions in order to demonstrate the diversity of green practices in excellent, affordable housing design. The Helena was selected for its green benefits of living made available for both market rate and affordable housing units. Most other sustainable apartment buildings do not reserve units for affordable housing.

Developed by the Durst Organization and Rose Associates, The Helena is expected to receive a LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council. Sustainable design elements are incorporated in practical yet unexpected ways. Roofs are covered in greenery, creating a more appealing view while helping to reduce storm water runoff, minimize heat gain and temper the micro-environment. Apartments include water conserving fixtures, Energy Star[TM] appliances and efficient lighting occupancy sensors and controls.
