Fox & Fowle pre-designs Wadsworth Atheneum.


The trustees of the Wadsworth Atheneum The Wadsworth Atheneum is the oldest public art museum in the United States and largest in the state of Connecticut. It is located in historic downtown Hartford, Connecticut, the state's capital.  Museum of Art in Hartford Hartford, city (1990 pop. 139,739), state capital, Hartford co., central Conn., on the west bank of the Connecticut River; settled as Newtown 1635–36 on the site of a Dutch trading post (1633; abandoned 1654), inc. 1784. , Conn. were presented with the preliminary design concept for the expansion and renovation of the museum at a board meeting held on June 14.

UN Studio, the design architects for the Wadsworth Atheneum, in concert with the firm of Fox & Fowle Architects, have been working for the last four months on the pre-design phase. They have studied the museum's campus of five adjoining buildings, interviewed members of the staff and the building committee, and analyzed an·a·lyze

Foremost among the Wadsworth Atheneum's goals is creating a sense of arrival and improving circulation within the museum. Other goals include dedicating a new gallery to temporary loan exhibitions; providing better amenities and more programs for visitors of all ages; addressing the immediate needs of its permanent collections and staff; and anticipating future growth.

The Wadsworth Atheneum's existing spaces have been reviewed by the architects, and will be upgraded, rehabilitated, or adapted for new use. For example, a state-of-the-art renovation of the museum theater is planned; the education center will be moved to provide a separate entrance for school groups, a lecture hall lecture hall nsala de conferencias;
