Fourth of July celebration.
Fourth of July
Celebration
Mama Opossum came to town,
Dressed up in a fancy gown
Of red and white and royal blue.
She wore a summer bonnet, too.
Three little opossums in single file
Trailed behind for the longest while.
And when they reached the city square,
They joined the celebration there.
"Be careful, dears, and stay with me,"
Said Mama Opossum to the three.
"Today we hail the stripes and stars
With fireworks shooting up to Mars!
"But let the expert strike the match,
While we sit far away and watch.
Then sparks won't fly and singe our fur."
So Mama's three stayed close to her.
They sat beside her on the ground,
While sparklers sizzled all around.
They stretched their faces toward the sky
And cheered at rockets bursting high.
"This land is good to you and me,"
Said Mama Opossum to the three.
"That's why we join in celebration
For the birthday of our nation.
Scurrying home in single file,
Three little opossums had to smile.
They all were safe and proud to be
In the home of the brave
and the land of the free.
