Four Seasons Software introduces SuperNOVA support for IBM AS/400 systems.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 4, 1995--Four Seasons Software today announced that its SuperNOVA 5.0 enterprise 4GL now supports IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  AS/400 systems, allowing true integration of AS/400 technology in an open, non-IBM environment.

With this support, SuperNOVA allows full application portability across OS/2, RS/6000 and AS/400 systems.

"Our AS/400 implementation is a true, full-featured one, making it possible to use the AS/400 in stand-alone mode with 5250 terminals, or in a full client/server deployment acting as both a client and a data management and application server," said Jossi Gil, founder and president of Four Seasons Software. "This opens up the AS/400 to be integrated with non-IBM platforms."

The SuperNOVA for AS/400 implementation supports:

o SQL/400 database o AS/400 native file system o IBM 5250 block mode terminals o Automatic ASCII-EBCIDIC format read conversion for

application deployment o APPC (Advanced Program-to-Program Communications) A high-level protocol from IBM that allows one program to interact with another across the network. It supports client/server and distributed computing by providing a common programming interface on all IBM platforms.  (LU6.2) and TCP/IP TCP/IP

Standard Internet communications protocols that allow digital computers to communicate over long distances.
 o OS/400 Version 2.3 and higher o Typical AS/400 printer support

Multi-Dimensional Portability

SuperNOVA is a comprehensive, database-, platform- and GUI- independent fourth generation language (language) fourth generation language - (4GL, or "report generator language") An "application specific" language, one with built-in knowledge of an application domain, in the way that SQL has built-in knowledge of the relational database domain.  (4GL) for professional application developers creating enterprise-wide, production-grade database applications. SuperNOVA supports the rapid development of stand-alone applications as well as enterprise applications that run in multiple desktop environments in a second generation, three-tiered client/server architecture An environment in which the application processing is divided between client workstations and servers. It implies the use of desktop computers interacting with servers in a network in contrast to processing everything in a large centralized mainframe. See client/server. .

With the addition of support for the AS/400, SuperNOVA can be used on PCs running MS-Windows, Windows 95, Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. , DOS, and OS/2 Presentation Manager, as well as with X Window, Motif and OpenLook on most available UNIX UNIX

platforms, and with OpenVMS and VMS (1) (Virtual Memory System) A multiuser, multitasking, virtual memory operating system for the VAX series from Digital. VMS applications run on any VAX from the MicroVAX to the largest unit. See OpenVMS. .

New User-Based Pricing and New Product Configurations

Four Seasons recently introduced user-based pricing for SuperNOVA 5.0, with progressive discounts based on the number of users. In addition, the company introduced flexible product configurations.

In addition to providing the corporate developer with a set of powerful tools to develop and deploy applications within complex environments, the robust SuperNOVA development environment is now available to individual software developers who want to build portable, small-scale applications independent of restrictions on databases, GUIs or platforms, and with the ability to scale to more advanced environments without changing their applications.

SuperNOVA is now available in the following configurations:

o SuperNOVA Desktop -- allows the single-user and workgroup

developer community building graphical or character-based

applications using local data files such as dBase, Btrieve, C-Isam

or flat ASCII (text) flat ASCII - (Or "plain ASCII") Said of a text file that contains only 7-bit ASCII characters and uses only ASCII-standard control characters (that is, has no embedded codes specific to a particular text formatter markup language, or output device, and no meta-characters).  files on PC-based systems to build and test their

applications in a local environment and later move the same

application into a client/server or distributed environment without

change. Pricing starts at $990 for a development license.

o SuperNOVA Client/Server Classic -- provides the application

developer with a powerful set of tools to develop client/server

applications allowing mixed database access using native

database connectivity software or middleware products like

ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) A database programming interface from Microsoft that provides a common language for Windows applications to access databases on a network.  and EDA/SQL. Integrated team development and version

control enables multiple developers to share application

resources across different networks and platforms and manage

their projects within a centralized code repository. Pricing starts

at $2,490 for a development license.

o SuperNOVA Server -- provides developers and organizations

using dumb terminals, X-terminals or Motif to develop

applications in multi-user, host-based environments with support

for applications to be used with SQL SQL
 in full Structured Query Language.

Computer programming language used for retrieving records or parts of records in databases and performing various calculations before displaying the results.
 databases. Pricing starts at

$2,490 for a development license.

o SuperNOVA Enterprise Client/Server -- enables developers

and organizations to develop mission-critical applications within

complex environments to utilize computing power and data stored

across the enterprise. Developers and system administrators

have a powerful set of tools to deploy and dynamically partition

an application -- partitioning application logic across multiple

servers and moving application processing to more powerful

servers -- without changing one single line of code or interrupting

the users. Pricing starts at $4,980 for a development license.

Leader in Application Partitioning

Four Seasons' application partitioning features have been available since 1991, longer than any other application development tool on the market. The latest version of this technology, SuperNOVA 5.0, supports the management of partitioned applications in a complex distributed environment, and enables users to drag and drop A graphical user interface (GUI) capability that lets you perform operations by moving the icon of an object with the mouse into another window or onto another icon. For example, files can be copied or moved by dragging them from one folder to another.  business objects and functions between available clients and servers.
