James Bermel, R.A., of Breger Bermel Associates, is the lead architect for the $8.56 million project, the centerpiece of which will be Stephen's House, named after Stephen Siller, a firefighter who lost his life in the 9/11 attacks. Stephen's House of The New York Foundling will serve as a temporary home for up to 24 children awaiting placement in foster care.

Construction on the five story, 22,800 s/f facility is set to begin in fall 2006 and will also feature an outdoor play area, finished basement and a library/ teen lounge.

Siller, who is survived by his wife and five children, lost his own parents when he was 10 years old, making The Foundling a particularly fitting partner for the foundation created in his memory. The campus will house all of The Foundling's Staten Island administrative offices as well as the Staten Island Preventive Services the duty performed by the armed police in guarding the coast against smuggling.
