Foundation honors 35 for excellence in newsletter journalism.

Called the David Swit Journalism Awards since last year after the Washington Business Information Inc. publisher and NEPF benefactor who died in December 1999, the awards recognize outstanding newsletter journalism.

American Health American Health Inc. is a company that manufactures health supplements. It is located in Holbrook, New York. One of its products is labeled the "Chewable Original Papaya Enzyme" with the attached registered trademark, "The 'After Meal Supplement'".  Consultants led the pack with four winners--followed by UCG UCG United Church of God
UCG Underground Coal Gasification
UCG University College Galway
UCG Unified Communications Group (Microsoft)
UCG Universal Command Guide for Operating Systems (Guy Lotgering book)
and Aspen Publishers, each with three. UCG has the most winners in the competition's 22-year history, with a total of 66.

In fact, it was UCG partner and senior publisher Dan Brown who introduced the 1st place winners-who each received a cash prize of $500-with lengthy and eloquent descriptions of each newsletter or article or series of articles. One winner that especially stood out was Aspen Publishers research editor Shawn Beard's "Preventing School Tragedies." Brown said:

"The Columbine High School Columbine High School is a secondary school in unincorporated Jefferson County, Colorado. The school is located at 6201 South Pierce Street, one mile west of the Littleton city limits and half a mile south of the Denver city/county line.  shooting in April 1999 prompted many journalists to write about school violence. But more important, it stirred one crusading publisher to create a tool to prevent these horrible tragedies.

"The prevention tool I'm talking I'm Talking was a 1980s Australian funk-pop rock band, noted for launching vocalist Kate Ceberano. History
After the break-up of the Melbourne-based experimental funk band Essendon Airport in 1983, members Robert Goodge (guitar), Ian Cox (saxophone) and Barbara Hogarth
about is the excellent crisis-prevention manual that wins this year's NEPF Best Looseleaf Award.

"It took nine months to produce 'Preventing School Violence' and the useful, well-organized content reflects that effort. School principals and superintendents get a whole chapter on warning signs, a section on actual safety procedures from schools around the U.S., an internet resources guide, page after page of smart ways to incorporate non-violence into the school curriculum and much more."

Brown pointed out that schools were allowed to photocopy some pages for no charge.
