Foster Wheeler awarded Glaxo contract.

CLINTON, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 3, 1995--Foster Wheeler Energy Limited has been awarded an $80-million (Singapore) contract by Glaxo Development Pte Ltd for the detailed engineering, procurement and construction of a new Small Scale Development Facility (SSDF) at its Jurong site in Singapore.

The contract was awarded to Foster Wheeler following successful completion of a front-end design package. Comprising production and pilot plant facilities, the SSDF will be located next to Glaxo's recently opened multipurpose plant, for which Foster Wheeler was also the main contractor.

The production plant area will manufacture fluticasone propionate, the active ingredient in Glaxo Wellcome's Flixonase anti-rhinitis nasal spray and Flixotide inhaled steroid for asthma treatment. The pilot plant will be used for small-scale chemical synthesis and process development of a range of new chemical entities.

Commenting on the facility's features, Les James, Foster Wheeler Project Manager, says, "Process flexibility and adaptability, cost effectiveness, containment and good facilities for decontamination were some of the key issues addressed in developing basic design concepts. The production building is designed for ease of future expansion to provide additional processing capability. Segregation of process areas within the building enables different products to be manufactured simultaneously."

He adds, "The execution strategy for the SSDF project builds on the success of the multipurpose plant and substantial `roll-over' benefits are anticipated from the reuse of appropriate design features. The core of the project team comprises Foster Wheeler and Glaxo Wellcome personnel previously involved in the multipurpose plant and this has resulted in the rapid creation of a well-knit team capable of meeting the considerable challenges that lie ahead."

Process commissioning is expected to commence in late 1997 with production during 1998. The new facility's ground-breaking ceremony took place at the Singapore site on June 20, 1995.
