Fort Wayne Affiliate Receives Grant.

The Apartment Association of Fort Wayne-NE Indiana has received a "Building Communities" grant to help Apartment Communities form Neighborhood Associations A neighborhood association is a group of residents, sometimes organized as 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, who take on problems or organize activities within a neighborhood. An association may have elected leaders and voluntary or mandatory dues.  and encourage independent owners to join the Neighborhood Associations where they own rental property. The grant was one of 53 given by Leadership Fort Wayne Fort Wayne, city (1990 pop. 173,072), seat of Allen co., NE Ind., where the St. Joseph and St. Marys rivers join to form the Maumee River; inc. 1840. It is the second largest city in the state, a major railroad and shipping point, a wholesale and distribution hub,  to groups in the city for projects that help foster community involvement. Almost 150 grant applications were submitted.

The guiding principle behind the "Building Communities" program is that ordinary individuals can make things better for the community as a whole by improving their small corner of it. A quote from Margaret Mead has been the inspiration for the program: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

Why does the Fort Wayne affiliate want to promote participation in neighborhood associations? Community Oriented o·ri·ent

Government (COG) is Fort Wayne's philosophy about city governance that gives primary responsibility for city issue solving to neighborhood association leaders. If a city resident is not a member of a neighborhood association, he/she is effectively disenfranchised from input into city government. Recent conflicts between rental owners and city government resulted in a Rental Housing Ordinance A law, statute, or regulation enacted by a Municipal Corporation.

An ordinance is a law passed by a municipal government. A municipality, such as a city, town, village, or borough, is a political subdivision of a state within which a municipal corporation has been
being passed in December. These conflicts and this ordinance could have been avoided if apartment communities and independent rental owners had been part of the neighborhood association system. This project is part of a long-term strategic plan for the Fort Wayne chapter to develop better public relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment. By its nature, public relations is devoted to serving particular interests by presenting them to the public in the most  for the rental housing industry with both the neighborhoods and city government.

This is the second time that the Apartment Association of Fort Wayne-NE Indiana has received a "Building Communities" grant. In 1998, the chapter received $2000 to promote apartment community participation in National Night Out Against Crime.
