Forest Lawn to Dedicate the Plaza of Mesoamerican Heritage Permanent Outdoor Exhibit During Hispanic Heritage Month.


GLENDALE, Calif. -- Special Events Complement the Dedication at Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills

Celebrating life in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , Forest Lawn(R) will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with the dedication of the Plaza of Mesoamerican Heritage, a permanent outdoor interpretive exhibit of stone sculpture at its Hollywood Hills Memorial-Park. The event will be hosted by Denise Valdez, weekend anchor for KNBC KNBC Kings Norton Bowling Club  television, on September 23, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. and is open to the public at no charge. In addition, Forest Lawn will offer two special events on September 25th that explore culture and art from Olmecs to Aztecs and Mayans.

The Plaza of Mesoamerican Heritage exhibit features 20 artifacts artifacts

 including human portraits, mythological figures, architectural elements, and hieroglyphic hieroglyphic (hī'rəglĭf`ĭk, hī'ərə–) [Gr.,=priestly carving], type of writing used in ancient Egypt. Similar pictographic styles of Crete, Asia Minor, and Central America and Mexico are also called hieroglyphics  relief panels that detail the pre-European history of what is now Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. Newly installed interpretive signage maps the geography of this region; illustrates a timeline from the Olmecs (1500 BC - 300 BC) to the Aztecs (AD 1325 - AD 1521); and discusses the cultural, artistic, and religious roots of highly advanced ancient cultures, including the Olmec, Zapotec, Teotihuacan, Toltec, Maya, Aztec, Totonac, and Huastec. All the artifacts are reproductions created in stone and concrete by artisans in Mexico, Italy, and the United States.

The dedication celebration will feature traditional Mesoamerican music performed on hand-made instruments by Mexika; a blessing of the plaza and Aztec Fire Dance by In Tlanextli Tlacopan, traditional Aztec Dancers from Mexico City, and recognition from community officials, celebrities, and dignitaries.

As part of its celebration of Hispanic History Month, two free events will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2004 at Forest Lawn(R)-Hollywood Hills. From the Olmecs to the Aztecs will help visitors discover the rich, diverse and complex history of ancient Mesoamerica in a slide-illustrated lecture and exhibit tour that will explore the artistic, religious and scientific achievements of these sophisticated civilizations. The event will be hosted by special guest instructor, Julia Sanchez, assistant director, Cotsen Institute of Archaeology The Institute of Archaeology is an academic department of University College London (UCL), in the United Kingdom. . From the Olmecs to the Aztecs begins at 10 a.m.

Olivia Reyes, art instructor, will host a special workshop, Making Maya Codices, beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 25th. The interactive session will allow guests to explore the masterpieces of Mesoamerican sculpture, learn Mesoamerican history and geography, and create a Mayan Codex codex
