Force say sorry for CS assault.

Byline: By BILLY PATERSON

A POLICE chief has been forced to apologise after a crazed PC attacked an innocent driver and his family with CS spray.

Bert Esquierdo, 53, was left temporarily blinded and unable to breathe during the assault by Chester Smith, 37, in February 2006.

He was attacked after shaking his head when the officer cut in front of him.

Smith sprayed gas into Bert's car, choking him, wife Elizabeth and son Jon, 12.

He then bundled Bert, of Cumnock, Ayrshire, to the ground and forced a knee into his back.

Smith pleaded guilty to the assault at Ayr Sheriff Court last week.

Strathclyde Police Chief Superintendent Jeanette Joyce wrote to Bert, saying: "The constable's reprehensible rep·re·hen·si·ble
