In keeping with: according to instructions. 3. the liberal talking point of the moment, studies have proven that increasing the minimum wage doesn't cost jobs. It would take very strong studies to establish something so counterintuitive coun·ter·in·tu·i·tive adj. Contrary to what intuition or common sense would indicate: "Scientists made clear what may at first seem counterintuitive, that the capacity to be pleasant toward a fellow creature is ... : Common sense says that when the price of something is set above market rates, people will buy less of that something--even when that "something" is labor. Most studies, as it happens, confirm the point: On balance, a higher minimum wage kills jobs, especially among the unskilled. Some people will get raises, yes--although few of them will be the people supporting a household who are invoked to arouse our compassion. To help them, we should cut the payroll tax Payroll Tax Tax an employer withholds and/or pays on behalf of their employees based on the wage or salary of the employee. In most countries, including the U.S., both state and federal authorities collect some form of payroll tax. or increase the child tax credit. The minimum wage, meanwhile, should be abolished, not increased. |
