For kids.

Since the Lambda-winning King & King was yanked from a school library in Wilmington, N.C., just imagine how King & King & Family will shake up conservatives. Author-illustrator duo Linda de Haan De Haan or de Haan may refer any of the following people or places:
  • De Haan, Belgian municipality
  • Wilhem de Haan, Dutch zoologist
  • Johan Bierens de Haan, Dutch biologist
and Stern Nijland return with a sequel to their clever first effort, in which a prince searching for a bride landed another prince instead. Here, the newlyweds honeymoon in the rain forest and carry home a small stowaway in their suitcase. Although not as charming and fresh as the first book, this is a beautifully illustrated and very welcome addition to the slim canon of gay-themed books for young children.

Also, don't miss Leslea Newman's rhyming romp The Boy Who Cried Fabulous, perhaps the first book since Little Lord Fauntleroy to celebrate a queeny boy.

Less essential is Nancy Garden's Molly's Family, a placid plac·id
adj.
1. Undisturbed by tumult or disorder; calm or quiet. See Synonyms at calm.

2. Satisfied; complacent.

[Latin placidus, from
acknowledgement of family diversity reminiscent of Newman's classic Heather Has Two Mommies but for a slightly older child. Still, it will help children of same-sex parents learn to deal with their classmates' reactions.--R.M.
