In the past, if a bank wanted to make its ordinary glass windows more energy efficient, the only alternative was to replace the ordinary glass with triple-pane glass. This increased the R value from 4 to 9. However, the triplepane glass required stronger glass framing, which drove up costs. In addition, triple-pane glass reduced visible light transmission by at least 20 percent.
