For Cambio founder, change is his muse.

Byline: Serena Markstrom The Register-Guard

When Cambio founder and songwriter Robert Meade refers to change, he hopes it means to grow in a positive direction.

Meade named his band Cambio, the Spanish word for change, two years ago after he left behind his old songwriting identity, solo Bob.

The 27-year-old was 16-year-old Bob when he first began writing music. He crammed an upright piano into his small bedroom in Santa Cruz Santa Cruz, city, United States

, Calif., and stole instruments from his relatives. Soon, he had 10 guitars and could barely see his floor.

Piles of songs littered his room as he wrote and wrote about the love he wanted, about love that was evading him.

Bob was just short for Robert. And although he was writing folk songs, he didn't listen to a lot of Bob Dylan Noun 1. Bob Dylan - United States songwriter noted for his protest songs (born in 1941)

.

"I fell asleep to some of his albums," said Meade, a tall, slender man with a quiet speaking voice and calm demeanor.

Meade listened to the Beatles, found Sublime to be the first contemporary group that caught his interest, then graduated to the Shins. Right now, he is fascinated by Leon Redbone Leon Redbone (date of birth unknown) is a performer of early 20th-century jazz and blues music. He first appeared on stage in Toronto, Canada in the mid-1970s. He is best recognized by his trademark Panama hat, dark sunglasses, and bow tie. .

Meade's own approach is far different, but he admires the way Redbone presents a song.

"The music is simple and mellow, and it's got a life of its own Memory Burn A Life Of Its Own was released by Noise Kontrol in 2002. Memory Burn is made up of several high profile musicians who came together to create this special work. ," Meade said. Redbone's words keep "moving forward into something - a rhythm."

From a solo act to a full band

Rhythm is something he decided he needed more of when he ditched the Bob act and started hearing his songs as if played by a full band. That change came during his first stint in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

Meade wrote about love then, and he writes about love now. His need for a full band makes sense given the shift in the way he writes about love.

Now he's looking out to connect and give, rather than stewing in selfish needs. He said he loves, well, everyone.

"Really, I just want there to be peace," he said. "That's what I want my music to bring to people."

"I stopped wanting to play by myself," he said. "I just let all those songs go and wrote new songs."

The new CD's "Out Here," "In a Moment," "Behind Closed Doors" and "Woke-Up" came from two different periods in New York. "Woke-Up" deals with letting go and moving on: growing.

"That's what Cambio is about," he said. "I change."

"Behind Closed Doors" came from riding crowded subways with people who bumped into each other but would not make eye contact.

Change is a constant for the band, which started out as a rock trio before numerous lineup moves contributed to its ever-evolving sound.

Right now, they call that sound "progressive rhythm and blues rhythm and blues (R&B)

Cambio is Eric Eiden on bass, Nathan Wallace on keyboards and second guitar, and Adam Bilenki on drums. Meade sings and plays rhythm guitar When a guitar is used to provide rhythmic and harmonic accompaniment for a singer or for other instruments in an ensemble, it is referred to as rhythm guitar. The rhythm guitar is commonly used to provide a rhythmic complement for the lead guitar, although the actual instruments .

After this tour, Cambio will have a new drummer and bass player.

"It might just be the curse of the band (name)," he said of the lineup changes.

Although Meade is soft- spoken, he lets loose live and on this recording, which he laid down at Crescent Studios in Eugene. That's the studio of Don Latarksi, the noted local guitarist and instructor.

Latarski recorded, mixed and provided some studio guidance on the project. He has a solo on "Deep N You," but the album is mainly self-produced, Meade said.

Ninkasi Brewing Company sponsored the release by covering costs of reproducing the discs and their art. The band plays two free CD release shows Saturday in Eugene before going on tour.

Meade likes that his band can be in the moment and experimental. Although sometimes he throws them off with a change, he said now they never get derailed for long. And it contributes an energy and "sporadic-ness" that he enjoys.

Those early solo days taught him much about songwriting. But the artist is best suited to the band sound and the inclusiveness of being part of a community.

"You can tell a good song, because when it's played acoustic and it still has everything with the full band," Meade said.

These days, you can still find him playing solo around town and developing songs at open mike nights.

Finally releasing these songs is exciting for him because it clears the way to write new ones.

A funny thing happened when he changed his songwriting focus. Soon after he stopped being so me-centric, he found love - perhaps the one he had always dreamed of in his early songs.

Meade is now married to Talia Winship, who manages the band. Together they have launched Your Mother's Music, a publishing and production company.
