PAUL JEWELL last night quit as Derby County boss when fans turned on him following the home defeat to Ipswich Town.

Jewell ended his draining 13-month spell at Pride Park after Jon Walters' goal handed the Rams a sixth defeat in the nine games, sparking chants of "Jewell out" at the final whistle.

Derby are today expected to confirm Jewell's decision to walk away from a job for the second time. He left Wigan in 2006.

After last season's embarrassment of being relegated as the worst side in Premier League history with only 11 points and 29 defeats, Jewell promised a push for promotion this term.

But the 44-year-old quit with Derby just six points above of the Championship relegation zone.

He had received support from chairman Adam Pearson but sources close to Jewell insisted he would decide when to go. Jewell offered his resignation in August when County were humiliated at home by Southampton but it was rejected.

In recent weeks Pearson again backed Jewell but pressure came from the club's US owners, who expected a serious tilt at promotion.

Jewell spent over pounds 5m on strikers and was slated by fans for spending pounds 1.5m on Welsh midfielder Robbie Savage, who was then loaned out to Brighton.
