THIERRY Henry has failed to make the final three short-list for the Fifa World Player of the Year award Several sports leagues honor their best player with an award called Player of the Year. In the United States, this type of award is usually called a Most Valuable Player award. The awards with the "player of the year" phrasing include these.  - a decision that is sure to infuriate his Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. Fabio Cannavaro, Ronaldinho and Zinedine Zidane were revealed as the three remaining candidates yesterday. Henry was the only player to reach the finals of both the Champions League and the World Cup and Wenger said this week the striker deserved to have been given the Ballon bal·lon

 D'Or, the European Footballer of the Year Footballer of the Year may refer to:

  • Asian Footballer of the Year

  • Oceania Footballer of the Year
 award won by Italy and Real Madrid defender Cannavaro. Fifa's award is voted for by the coaches and captains of all 207 national teams, who each pick their top three. Barcelona's Brazilian Ronaldinho has won it for the last two years and despite a poor World Cup is front-runner again, though three-times winner Zidane may have a chance as a sympathy vote after retiring following his World Cup final red card.
