Football Star and Nokia Team Up To

Improve Education and Communication in Schools

Nokia, the world's leading supplier of wireless phones, is proud to announce today that famed Dallas Cowboys football hero, Emmitt Smith, has been named national spokesperson for ClassLink--a program designed to increase the quality of education in America through the use of wireless technology. Smith will appear at select ClassLink schools nationwide in an effort to promote the program, reinforce the importance of education and encourage students to increase communication with teachers and parents.

Nokia's partnership with Smith is another example of Nokia's ongoing commitment to create a positive impact on society that extends beyond the advanced technology products and services the company creates. Through ClassLink, a program formed in conjunction with The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association See TIA.

High personal expectations and self-determination lead Nokia to choose Smith as the spokesperson for ClassLink. Smith is a role model for America's youth, as he has successfully balanced a professional football career with a "deep appreciation" for education.

"My mother has always pushed me to succeed, and from an early age she taught me that education goes a long way," said Smith. "I am proud to be part of ClassLink, and believe that wireless technology can be an instrumental tool to improve education and to increase communications between teachers, parents and students."

Currently, more than 90 percent of all education classrooms in the United States do not have telephones, leaving teachers and students isolated from the rest of the world. In a national survey, teachers and principals across the United States chose wireless telephones as the No. 1 technology they desire for their classrooms--over computers and Internet access. In addition, 87 percent of teachers with wireless phones reported increased communication with parents.

"We are impressed with Emmitt's ability to communicate the importance of a good education. Through his athletic talent, his own example and his amazing ability to motivate, he has inspired many young people to set goals and strive to achieve them," said K-P Wilska, president, Nokia, Inc., Americas. "He is an excellent role model for young people throughout the United States, which makes him a perfect national spokesperson for the ClassLink program."

Smith's first ClassLink appearance to speak with students will be in Orlando on Thursday, May 19, at Jackson Middle School. Upcoming ClassLink appearances are additionally planned for schools in cities including Dallas, Tex., and San Diego, Calif.
