 has a spring in his step once again -- and it's not surprising.

He has seen his side weather early-season defeats and player in discipline to bounce back to form.

``We had a much-improved performance in Cleckheaton the other week, '' Duff explained.

``Last Saturday we witnessed another very useful performance against Tynedale that has moved us up to third in the table and we are starting to get things together.

``Early on in the season we seemed to be on the back foot but the boys have pulled themselves out of it. ''

There's no hiding the Blues' ambitions and the summer's recruitment campaign endorses that.

Kiwi hooker Mike Howe has been the vital piece in the jigsaw and there is now strength in depth with the likes of Anthony Birley Professor Anthony Richard Birley was the Professor of Ancient History at University of Manchester (1974-90) and at University of Dusseldorf (1990-2002). He is the son of the archaeologist Eric Birley, who bought the house next to Vindolanda where Anthony and his brother Robin and  kicking well and Paul Brett Paul Brett is a classic rock guitarist. He played lead guitar with Strawbs, The Overlanders, Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Elmer Gantry’s Velvet Opera, The Velvet Opera, Tintern Abbey, Fire, Roy Harper, Al Stewart, Lonnie Donegan, and switched to solo 12 string guitar in the  waiting in the wings.

``This is the strongest squad we've had for some time and the players are starting to gel, '' Duff added.

``I'm confident we'll be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. All the newcomers are doing well and Mike Howe's impact since arriving from Orrell has been tremendous. ''

 wing forward Chris Planchant, who burst onto the scene with Birkenhead, is also one to watch. His work-rate and stamina will be tested this afternoon at newly-promoted Bradford and Bingley.
