Football: Liverpool under-18s cup hope.

LIVERPOOL under-18s turn their attentions to the FA Youth Cup tonight when they take on Burnley.

John Owens's side travel to Turf Moor (kick-off 7pm) with the coach having plenty of options in a healthy looking squad of 24. He used almost two different sides in the Youth Cup victory over Ipswich and the league defeat at Crewe last weekend.

Owens said: "Last week was a good chance to give to players a chance. Adam Hammill, Ryan Flynn and James Frayne just had a rest day. The other lads from Mel-wood don't usually get involved and players like the two substitutes against Crewe - Ryan Wignall and Jonathan Pringle - who had not had much action got half-an-hour each.

"So it is good to be doing well in a few competitions so everyone gets a chance."

Liverpool will check on the fitness of Calum Woods, who played against Crewe last week despite having an ankle problem, which needed stitches. He came back earlier than he would have normally due to the lack of available defenders.

And he is getting continuous treatment to rectify the problem.

Owens said: "He came back earlier than he probably should have. But it shows the grit and determination that he managed to survive the 90 minutes and play well."

Long-term injury victim Jay Spearing is running again, but as not yet started full training. While Ray Putterill and Lee Woodward are both out due to back injuries.
