Football: Blues ease drop fears; Derry C 1 Waterford U 2.

Byline: ARTHUR DUFFY

DERRY City's relegation problems deepened at the Brandywell last night - but victory for Waterford United should guarantee the 'Blues' their Premier Division status.

Goals from David Mulcahy and Alan Reilly Alan Reilly (born August 22 1980 in Dublin, Ireland), is an Irish football player who currently plays for Eircom League of Ireland First Division club Shelbourne. Reilly plays as a left-sided midfielder.  gave United the points, while Peter Hutton was on target for City.

United made their intentions clear as early as the ninth minute when Daryl Murphy's header crashed off the post.

But six minutes later Derry should have broken the deadlock when Sean Hargan Sean Hargan (born November 6, 1974 in Derry, Northern Ireland) is a defender playing for Football League of Ireland club, Derry City. One of the veterans of the 1996-97 league-winning side, Hargan continues to play an integral part for the Candystripes and had his testimonial year  failed to beat keeper Dan Connor Dan Connor may refer to:
  • Dan Connor (American football player) (born 1985), American football player who currently plays for Penn State
  • Dan Connor (footballer) (born 1981), Irish football goalkeeper who currently plays for Drogheda United
 in a one-on-one situation.

Waterford made the breakthrough in the 52nd minute when a Reilly corner was latched onto by Mulcahy who ghosted in at the back post to head the ball firmly home.

City equalised in the 66th minute when a Gareth McGlynn cross was met by Hutton whose header beat Connor.

But Waterford bounced back five minutes later when Fenn found Reilly who gave Gough no chance in the 71st minute.

Vinny Sullivan almost made it 3-1, before Hutton also missed a clear chance for City in the 92nd minute.
