SIR BOBBY ROBSON Sir Robert William Robson CBE (born 18 February 1933, in Sacriston, County Durham, England), commonly known as Bobby Robson (IPA: /ˈbɒbi ˈrɒbsən/  last night revealed how he turned down the chance to become manager of Portuguese giants Benfica.

The Newcastle boss, 70 in February, was last week "sounded out by Benfica who told me I was their number one choice".

But as he prepared his men for their Champions League clash against his former club Barcelona at the Nou Camp tonight, Robson added: "I knew if I took the job I'd be the only manager in Portuguese history to manage all three big clubs in their game, including Sporting Lisbon and Porto. They gave me an hour to make up my mind but I only needed a minute to say no.

"My job at Newcastle is my life and my last job.

"It is going great and there is more to come."

The veteran manager is hoping for more glory tonight against a Barcelona side doing well in Europe but stuttering in the Spanish league Spanish league can refer to:
  • Spanish League, an outdated unit of measurement
  • Liga de Fútbol Profesional (Professional Football League), commonly known as La Liga, Primera División
.

Last night Barcelona's former Arsenal winger Marc Overmars Marc Overmars (born March 29, 1973 in Emst) is a former Dutch football player. He was best known as a right-footed left-winger, although he had that rare ability to be able to use both his feet with equal precision and power.  admitted the morale of his side is low, and that the heat is on.

And he confessed that allowing Newcastle to open the scoring would lead to the home crowd turning against their team.

He said: "We've had a few bad results. We can't afford to concede or make any little slip. There may be a reaction from the fans to the weekend defeat by Rayo Vallecano."
