Football: Barton so good he's innocent.

Byline: Brian Reade Brian Reade is an award-winning writer who has two weekly opinion columns, one on sport, in the Daily Mirror. He is a left-wing republican with very outspoken views, and has interviewed many well known people, including Mohammed Ali.

MANY Newcastle fans have shown their disgust at the club's decision to stick with Joey Barton Joseph Anthony Barton (born 2 September 1982 in Liverpool, Merseyside) (IPA: /ˈdʒəʊiː ˈbɑːtʊn/) is an English footballer. .

Others have said he's done his time and should be given another chance.

But the one quote which I liked best, which most fans can identify with, came from a Geordie friend of a friend: "You know, towards the back end of the season, he started playing so well that I began to think he might be innocent."

Sad but true.
