to end the most miserable spell of his career and get him back into the England side.

Butt will make his first Premiership appearance for Birmingham at Fulham today after calling time on his nightmare spell with Newcastle.

is only on loan at St Andrews for a season but hopes to make the switch permanent at the end of the campaign.

By then, Butt hopes to have landed himself a place in Sven Goran Eriksson's World Cup squad - and to have helped Birmingham into the top six.

He said: "Every player's ambition is to play for their country, but first and foremost I want to get back to playing well for Birmingham.

"If England come calling that is a bonus. My ambition is to get fit and play regularly again and get the team playing like I know they can.

"I saw them play some brilliant football at home last season and we want to get as high up the table as possible.

"Our ambition is to finish in the top six. It is going to be a difficult challenge for us but we need to do that. We have got the players here and I am well aware of how passionate the fans are when I have played against them."Birmingham tried to sign Butt in January last year and the player wishes he had joined up with former Old Trafford Old Trafford commonly refers to two sporting arenas:

Instead, the move to Newcastle was a disaster, as he failed to settle and was even booed by the north-east club's fans after their FA Cup semi-final defeat.

Butt added: "I would be lying if I said Steve Bruce wasn't the biggest factor in me joining this club. I have known him since I was 14 so I know what kind of man he is. I had no hesitation in signing.

"Maybe I should have joined the Blues earlier. I spoke to the manager about 18 months ago and he told me the direction in which he wanted to take the club. At the time my missus mis·sus

"I kept an eye on Birmingham though and with the players he has brought in and the way the team has developed they have moved in the direction he said they would.

"Last summer things changed and I am not too sure whether Birmingham came back in for me, but Newcastle were interested and I wanted to play in Europe, so I went there.

"Things didn't work out for me and when I spoke to Steve again I knew what he had done, so I was delighted to join."
