It may now be known as the Traore Turn, but Kop boss Benitez did not see the funny side and said: "It was a big mistake. You have to clear the ball in your six-yard box. We must learn."

However the mistake by one of the few known Liverpool faces was punishment for his decision to put out a vastly under-strength side, with just three players left from Saturday's defeat by Manchester United.

But Benitez said: "They tried, but we do not have enough players to go for four competitions. We can't play all games with the same players - I don't think it was a mistake.

"We are all disappointed but I think the fans will understand."

Antonio Nunez added to Liverpool's humiliation by being sent off for elbowing Tony Grant.
