Yet Bruce has revealed that his old Manchester United boss wanted to kiss him after he masterminded Wigan's 1-1 draw at Chelsea.

The Latics boss said Fergie left a message on his phone within minutes of last Monday's game finishing.

Bruce said: "The message went something like 'if you weren't so ugly I'd come and give you a kiss'.

"It was very, very nice.

"He'd wished us luck before the game and said 'make sure you get a result'. I speak to him at least once a month but I've had a couple of conversations with him this week."

Bruce added: "If we can stay up then it will help us in our recruitment of foreign players."
