The 37-year-old, who also had a spell with Dundee, is living in Glasgow with his wife and three children.

And even though he has not played since the summer, Caniggia insists he is ready to turn on the style again with top South American club San Lorenzo San Lorenzo, town, S Honduras, on the Gulf of Fonseca. Caniggia, who earned pounds 1.3 million a year at the mega-rich Qatar club he joined from Ibrox, said: 'I have always taken care of myself. Of course, I need to play on the field but this is not a problem.

'In 1999, when I returned to Atalanta after a year out of football the start I made then was good enough.'

The Argentina legend, who was a hero in the World Cup sides of 1990 and 1994, revealed a return to his homeland holds a lot of appeal.

The fact he has the opportunity to team up again with Hector 'Bambino' Veira - his coach at his first club River Plate - is an additional plus.

But the biggest lure is playing in the Copa Libertadores, the South American Champions League.

Caniggia, who will celebrate his 38th birthday in January, said: 'I would be delighted to play for San Lorenzo. I am really interested and the offer is very tempting.'

He has already had discussions with Hector Sluga, one of the leading candidates to become San Lorenzo's club president.

'He has talked to my agent Pablo Cosentino and the truth is the offer is very tempting.

'We have to close some details but I am very interested, especially because the team will play in the Copa Libertadores. I would like to play in that with San Lorenzo.

'Of course, the fact I have worked with Hector Veira before is important. I have a great relationship with him. I worked with him at River Plate and Boca.

'He wanted to take me to Newell's, a team from Rosario who are now top of the local championship but unfortunately I could not leave Qatar at the time.

'We have a friendship which is very important and influences me. I know how Veira works and so I know what to expect.'

'Personally, I like the offer. It is not far from the contract I had at Qatar. I want to finish my career in Argentina. I am very enthusiastic and we will wait and see.'

One of Caniggia's greatest moments was scoring the goal - from a Diego Maradona Diego Armando Maradona (born October 30, 1960) is an Argentine former footballer. He played in four World Cups and received the FIFA award of Player of the century (People's choice) after being voted in 2000 in an international internet fan poll as the best football player of all  pass - which knocked Brazil out of Italia 90.

He kicked off his career in 1985 with River Plate before going on to play in Italy with Verona, Atalanta and Roma before going on to Benfica and Boca Juniors, followed by a second stint at Atalanta.

In 2001, Caniggia's travels brought him to the shores of Tayside where he was lured to Dundee by the Bonetti brothers.

It was a move which was to capture the imagination of Scottish football and Caniggia performed so well it came as no surprise when Rangers took him to Ibrox where he was again a success.

It now appears the man nicknamed 'the bird' will be off soon on another flight, all the way to the country where it all began for him.
