SPANISH giants Real Madrid have made a shock move for Mikel Arteta.

Now the Rangers midfielder could stall on a move to Real Sociedad.

Arteta has already agreed a four year deal with the San Sebastian club after Ibrox officials met their chairman Jose Luis Astiazaran last week.

But boss Alex McLeish has a higher offer from Monaco and now Madrid are interested in the 22-year-old.

New Bernabeu coach Jose Antonio Camacho knows of Arteta's quality from his time as Spain's national coach, when the former PSG player was Under-21 skipper.

Real's general manager Jorge Valdano asked Arteta's agent about his availability several weeks ago.

Mailsport understands that if Camacho doesn't get his top target Emerson from Roma he'll turn his attention to Arteta.

Brazilian Emerson is keen on a move to Juventus but Roma chiefs would rather he went to Spain than one of their Serie A rivals.

Arteta on holiday in Spain has two years to run on his Rangers deal.

But the former Barcelona kid is desperate to return to Spain.

The chance to join Raul, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham might persuade Arteta to wait.

Meanwhile former team-mate Nuno Capucho has opened his heart on his year of hell at Ibrox.

The Portuguese said he was singled out for special treatment by Fernando Ricksen every day at training and claimed he was let down by McLeish.

A source close to the player revealed: 'Nuno felt it was wrong the way Ricksen was allowed to get away with over-the-top tackling in training. He also felt McLeish should have been stronger for him.

'Nuno is delighted he is no longer part of Rangers and won't advise Portuguese players to join them.'
