Football: Albion in talks on Euro striker; Mowbray targets Slovenian star.

Byline: By Chris Lepkowski OUR MAN AT ALBION

ALBION are plotting a move for Slovenian Under-21 international Nejc Pecnik.

The Baggies have already held preliminary discussions with NK Celje with a view to signing the talented 21-year-old, who can play as an attacking midfielder

or as a more conventional striker.

No deal has been agreed but I understand a delegation from The Hawthorns recently met Marjan Vengust, president of the Slovenian club, to discuss Pecnik, who has scored seven goals this season.

Vengust refused to reveal the name of the interested party but admitted there had been talks.

"I have been in discussions but nothing has been agreed as yet," he said.

"There is interest in Nejc but he still has a year left on his current deal.

"He is one of the biggest talents in Slovenian football so we know that he will be regarded by many clubs abroad."

Meanwhile, manager Tony Mowbray Tony Mowbray, (born November 22 1963), is a former professional football player and the manager of West Bromwich Albion. Playing career

The Baggies visit the fourth-placed club knowing they will pose one of Albion's biggest tests of the campaign so far.

Stoke are renowned for playing direct 'route one' football in contrast to Albion's expansive passing game. Despite the contrast in playing styles, Albion are no strangers to taking on, and beating, sides who play a more functional form of football.

Mowbray's men convincingly swept aside Watford last month when the Hornets were nine points clear at the top of the Championship.

"The players know what to expect," said Mowbray. "We've played Stoke already this year so it's nothing new for us.They are having a fantastic season.

"It will be a huge test for us. We played against Watford, a team who have a similar type of philosophy, and came out on top.

"That's the challenge ahead for us. We will have to do certain things well to make sure we stay in the game.

"They ask a lot of questions of you."

Stuart Nicholson has returned to Albion after his loan spell with Shrewsbury was terminated due to personal problems.

Although the 20-year-old striker officially remains on a season-long loan with the Shrews, he is back training with the Baggies.

It is now hoped the Football League will rubberstamp the termination of Nicholson's loan spell during the January window as it is in the best interests of all three parties.
