Football: Agathe hopeful on Roma move.

DIDIER AGATHE revealed he'd love to play for amateur side Saint-Pierroise in his homeland - but is waiting to take up a trial with Roma.

The former Celtic defender is currently in the French colony of Reunion Islands where he was born. He insists he is there to relax and not play football for the local amateur side.

Agathe, who settled the remainder of his contract at Celtic in January after failing to impress Gordon Strachan, is still without a club despite claiming he was wanted by Leeds, Middlesbrough and even Arsenal on trial.

Of the offer to join Saint-Pierroise, Agathe said: "I am sure it is a good idea but there are other elements which have to be taken into account.

"Mostly, I don't want to wreck my chances of signing for a club before July.

"I would also have to wait for a month to be registered to play. It is the club in my heart. It touches me that they want me to play in their colours.

"It is where my brothers played and where I discovered football. It is the wish of the people on the streets to see me in the shirt. I want to please them.

"If I listen to my heart I would have said 'yes' straight away. But I have a job as a professional which is not over. I have not arrived at retirement age yet."

Agathe revealed he has been in touch with Serie A side Roma but admits he may yet play in England next season.

He added: "I am back on the islands to recharge my batteries and those of my family.

"I'm waiting to be physically ready before I go to Roma. The president wants me to go there and see me play. It is just a verbal offer and there's been nothing official.

"At the moment, I have some serious interest from clubs, mostly in England. We will know definitely at the end of June."
