Football: Shane shame; EURO 2008 Austria-Switzerland.

SHANE Long had hoped to have done enough against Germany to play a more prominent role against Cyprus on Wednesday but injury has put paid to that.

Long was forced to pull out of the squad for the midweek qualifier yesterday.

"It's a big game on Wednesday and three points against Cyprus would make the table look a bit better - but we want a bit of revenge there and I think we owe it to ourselves," said the Tipperary man.

"It will definitely be a hard game. They have held Germany to a point as well but we have to come out of this qualifying tournament with our heads held high."

Long made a big impact when he replaced Kevin Doyle and almost provided the breakthrough with a low shot that Jens Lehmann did well to hold.

He recalled: "I couldn't have hit it any better and I thought it was going to hit the back of the net.

"But it was a great save. That's the quality you're up against I suppose."
