Fools march in to market, Maude, Vet's.

Byline: BUZZWORTHY by The Register-Guard

There will be no Saturday Market this year. Organizers decided that fresh air, tasty food, live music and handcrafts just weren't enough to make it worth the effort to host the weekly outdoor market.

Just joking. The market will resume Saturday, on April Fools' Day April Fools' Day
 or All Fools' Day

First day of April, named for the custom of playing practical jokes on that date. Though it has been observed for centuries in several countries, including France and Britain, its origin is unknown.
, for its 37th season. It will be open through mid-November from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the park blocks, Eighth Avenue and Oak Street.

A complete schedule is in the Ticket calendar or at eugenesaturdaymarket.org, but opening day highlights include Zambuko Marimba marimba: see xylophone.

And if you leave the market not having had your fill of foolishness, head over to the Vet's Club ballroom at 8 p.m. for the third annual Drunk Puppet Night. Trunk Full of Faces Theater is putting on the event, which organizers promise will feature wicked, naughty and irreverent puppets.

Herr Doctor will emcee the event. Former Slug Queen Accordionna will lead a seven-piece Drunk Puppet Band with special guest, reigning Slug Queen Frank Slug-snotra. The band will open the show at 8 p.m., then it will play between sets and after the puppets have passed out.

And it wouldn't be fair if only the puppets could have a few, so the Vet's Club is setting up a special upstairs bar just for this event.

Earlier that day, you'll have another chance to see the Slug Queen at work when she and her court make an appearance at the 2006 Jell-O Art Show and Tacky Food Buffet.

Each year, artists create works of Jell-O for display and offer edibles conjured to be as tacky as possible. There is also "itinerant ITINERANT. Travelling or taking a journey.
