Food supplies and pioneering skills.COUNTRYSIDE: I have loved your magazine since I found it in the early 1990s. The variety and timeliness of your articles certainly reflect on what interests me, and also opens up new avenues to reflect on. I like the mix of old and new skills, and eye-openers about some of what is going on in the world that doesn't get enough attention. Don't stop! I would like to see something written about the food storage program that the U.S. had until Clinton dissolved it, and perhaps a petition started to re-enact re·en·act also re-en·act tr.v. re·en·act·ed, re·en·act·ing, re·en·acts 1. Emergency rations are items of food and drink that a person will be able to rely on for 1 night, or a night and a day. The rations are to help people survive until they have some help. . Having had to rely on Meals-Ready-to-Eat (M.R.E.s) a couple of times for my family, I can tell you that they will not replace staples as people settle back in after a disaster. M.R.E.s are basically military "get bys," and not the comforting foods that bring one out of shock. It was also a comfort that our farmers were supplying the stockpile stock·pile n. I enjoyed the blacksmithing article by Ken Scharabok in the Jan/Feb 04 issue. Both of my parent's fathers blacksmithed as part of their farming routines in "the suburbs" of Jamestown, TN, from about 1900 through the early 1970s. We were not allowed to touch the tools without permission, but enjoyed the strange look of some of the really old ones. People like Ken keep the pioneer farming abilities alive. Please keep them coming.--Beth Easterly Thanks for the idea, Beth. We'll look into it.
