Food inspection firm sold to Australian company SAI.The EFSIS EFSIS European Food Safety Inspection Service EFSIS East Florida Shelf Information System (University of Miami) food inspection and certification business has been sold to Australian company SAI Global in a deal worth a total of pounds 5.6m. Formed in January 1999, EFSIS was owned 60% by the Meat and Livestock Commission The Meat and Livestock Commission, (MLC), was set up by the UK Government under the Agriculture Act 1967 with Government money with the remit to promote the sale of red meat. EFSIS operates globally and is the leading inspection and certification company in its field, providing manufacturers, retailers, farmers and caterers with the expertise to ensure the highest standards are maintained within the food and drink industry. The staff of around 100 people will continue to be employed by EFSIS under the new ownership of SAI Global and their UK headquarters will remain for the time being at Winterhill House in Milton Keynes. The share of money from the sale will be used by the MLC for long-term strategic investment to benefit the meat and livestock industry. Kevin Roberts, MLC director general, said: "The commission has worked hard to build EFSIS, but we now feel this is an opportune time for the sale which will allow the company to develop its commercial interests beyond the field of red meat." |
