HERE'S some food for thought - women pile on the pounds when they are under pressure, it was claimed yesterday.

A survey has discovered female students binge on junk food junk food

 in the lead-up to exams.

Dietician dietician Nutritionist A health professional with specialized training in diet and nutrition  Aoife Kirwan said: "The research shows that usually female students tend to eat more healthily than male students.

"Even their snacks are healthier - the girls tend to choose tea, fresh fruit, juice, yoghurt and crackers while the boys go for crisps, soft drinks, coffee and muffins.

"Male students are also more likely than female students to eat pizza, a take-away take·a·way

"But when quizzed about their eating habits during intense study times just before exams, nearly half [48 per cent] of female students ate more junk food at this time - against 38 per cent of males.

"Generally, 68 per cent of the female students said they snack more during an intense study period - as against 57 per cent of males.

"It is key to note 76 per cent of male students said their eating habits change during this stressful time - but 91 per cent of female students change.

"I don't know the reason why females eat more unhealthy in the run-up to and during exams, perhaps they get more stressed and boys are more laid back.

"But this is purely speculation on my part."

The survey found mothers did not believe their children snacked more during the exam period - with just over a quarter of mums noticing a difference compared to 64 per cent of students saying they over-indulge at exam time.

The report confirmed that students who live at home eat healthier than those who have flown the nest.

Half of students living away from home said they eat more junk food, while 25 cent of those regularly skipped meals.

Also yesterday, beauty Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain was on hand to launch www.brainfood.ie, which is encouraging students to eat healthily ahead of the Leaving and Junior Cert exams next week.

It aims to highlight the importance of Omega-3 while studying.

Ms Kirwan said that among other things "Omega 3 has been shown to benefit the heart, mental health, depression, Attention Deficit Disorder attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder (ADD or ADHD)

The brain is divided into two sides - the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body and vice versa VICE VERSA. On the contrary; on opposite sides. .

60 per cent of the fats in the brain are Omega-3 with DHA - the important one for brain development.

In its first year, a newborn baby's brain grows to almost three times its size at birth.

Humans have the most complex brain of any animal on Earth.

The brain generates 25 watts of power while the body is awake - enough to illuminate a light bulb.
