 Elementary Division luncheon. To kick off this new "Teacher Talk" feature, SchoolArts interviewed Elizabeth about her award and her teaching.

SA Congratulations, Elizabeth. How do you feel about being singled out for national recognition as an outstanding teacher?

EW It's a joy to do something that you love, and a blessing to be recognized for that thing.

SA Why do you love doing what you do? Why is it important?

EW I have extraordinary support from my family and friends, and I learn every day from my students. The greatest gift I can give my students is to encourage their dreams and give them the tools they need to explore their potential. Education is collaboration Working together on a project. See collaborative software. , and art can be a tool to bring everyone together.

SA What motivates your curriculum choices?

EW My goals are student learning and student success. I believe in keeping the focus on the art while integrating it throughout the curriculum. Art is a wonderful way to show meaning and purpose across the curriculum. Students at the elementary level benefit from utilizing a variety of media, techniques, and resources. Students who participate in regular, developmentally appropriate instruction throughout elementary school elementary school: see school.  can develop extraordinary artistic skills.

SA What's the biggest challenge you face as an art teacher?

EW Isolation. It is very important to build relationships within your school and your community. It is also important to communicate with other art educators through your state and national art education organizations. These people can be valuable resources for building a strong program for students and continued professional growth for yourself.

SA What advice would you give to a new teacher just starting out?

EW Be visible. Be involved. Promote, promote, promote. Show everyone what art can do.

Many people have a lot to offer your students and would love to be involved with a successful art program. Focus on what is best for students and develop relationships with universities, museums, parents, community leaders, and artists to provide enriched opportunities for students.

Share your ideas and always be on the lookout for in search of; looking for.
