The FLORIDA PANTHER (Felis concolor coryi) is a subspecies of mountain lion. However, this endangered cat resides in isolated areas of the Florida Everglades and Big Cypress Swamp. The males measure seven feet in length (including the tail) and weigh 100 to 160 pounds. Females are smaller at six feet and 55 to 100 pounds. The Florida panther is mostly crepuscular (active at dusk and dawn) and feeds primarily on white-tailed deer but also consumes wild hogs and raccoons. As habitat shrinks, the remaining population is experiencing a loss of genetic viability making it vulnerable to disease.
