COATINGSTECH was launched in January 2004 as the FSCT member journal successor to JOURNAL OF COATINGS TECHNOLOGY. COATINGSTECH offers news of the industry, of the Federation, and of its constituent societies, as well as technology updates, new product announcements, news of the industry, and a changing mix of articles on a broad spectrum of topics in coatings technology. With this issue and next month's Buyers' Guide, we round out the second year of publication in our new two-journal format. Repeatedly this year in COATINGSTECH we have focused on innovation and change--changes in how we do research, changes in how we do business, changes in the market, changes in methods. This month is no exception. There's a technology update from Eastman discussing the performance of CHDA in polyester polyols for two-component polyurethane coatings. The latest segment in our on-going Analytical Series is on the use of fracture mechanics Fracture mechanics is a method for predicting failure of a structure containing a crack. It uses methods of analytical Solid mechanics to calculate the driving force on a crack and those of experimental Solid mechanics to characterize the material's resistance to fracture. in the characterization of coatings--a far cry from the "cold-slam" test!
