 by protests over plans to fly a gay pride flag on the same pole as Old Glory, the mayor of Lakewood, Ohio Lakewood is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is part of the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Area, and borders the city of Cleveland. The population was 56,646 at the 2000 census, making it the third largest city in Cuyahoga County, only behind Cleveland (478,403) , found the solution: erect a second pole. "We are trying to be responsive to the gay community," said Mayor Madeline Cain

Councilman Dennis Dunn, who voted with other council members in June to raise the rainbow flag rainbow flag rainbow nRegenbogenfahne f or -flagge f , said he expected it to fly on the same pole as the U.S. flag and a banner commemorating American prisoners of war prisoners of war, in international law, persons captured by a belligerent while fighting in the military. International law includes rules on the treatment of prisoners of war but extends protection only to combatants. .

But Cain said the new pole is an inspiration that will allow the city to fly flags from groups seeking special recognition. "Let's preserve the dedicated pole for the U.S. flag and the POW flag," she said.
