It has already created more than 40 high-tech jobs at Broughton with a further 40 expected over the next 12 months.

It was also revealed by Raytheon bosses yesterday that Nato is also interested in the system.

Defence Procurement Minister Lord Bach said the spy-in-the-sky system is the kind of equipment which would be so useful in the ``difficult climate'' Britain finds itself.

He also said the system would have peaceful application, such as tracking refugees.

The pounds 40m Global Express business jets produced by Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier, will be flown into Broughton and gutted, so that they can be modified.

The aircraft will be able to fly missions of nearly 14 hours, fly at almost 50,000ft and provide detailed surveillance. It not only gives high resolution images of objects on the ground but can track targets, such as helicopters.

Lord Back said: ``In 52 secs it could transmit the Encyclopedia Britannica, complete with pictures, to a ground station.''

When Raytheon was preparing to pull the plug on aircraft production at Broughton and transfer the Hawker jet business to the USA,it looked at though the Raytheon factory would close.

An unprecedented union campaign, supported by the then local MP Barry Jones, fought to save the factory as a service centre for jets.

``It's very important we understand how our American colleagues modify and integrate the first aircraft. We send our team to Greenville to understand their processes and procedures and bring it back to Broughton.

``For Broughton this is a fantastic start a gain. We are back in the aircraft modification business with an absolute state-of- the art system we think the UK government will be exceptionally proud of.''

Works union convenor Billy Mullin said: ``This is something we have anticipated for some time and now it has come to fruition.''
