Flower carpet honour.

A BLANKET of snowdrops is being planted either side of the Tyne to commemorate those who have died from asbestos related cancer mesothelioma.

In total 10,000 snowdrops will be planted by Gateshead, North Tyne-side and South Tyneside councils in partnership with The Snowdrop Fund, created by Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund of Wallsend.

The first 2,000 snowdrops will be planted at a ceremony tomorrow at 11am in Workers Memorial Garden in Saltwell Park, Gateshead. A second planting is at noon on October 31 at the Sir GB Memorial Hunter Hospital, Wallsend, and a third on November 3, 11 am at Lawe Top Roundabout, Lawe Road, South Shields.
