 bathometric feature existing between the river and Monterey Canyon Monterey Canyon is a submarine canyon in Monterey Bay, California often studied by the scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories.

Monterey Canyon begins at Moss Landing, California (long. = -121.79; lat. = 36.
 ("Sediments sink river's flow into sea," SN: 11/17/01, p. 308). The river has a high sediment load, so if these currents weren't present, sediments from the Salinas River would settle on the continental shelf without creation or sustenance of the riverine bathometric feature that exists today.

These currents had been suspected but not observed or measured, until the new research.--S. PERKINS
