IT WAS only the first race in a seven match series, but it could be that Florence Melly are the school to beat in this season's Liverpool & District Primary School Cross Country League.

At Wavertree, the youngsters appeared in fine form when they supplied the first three home in S the Inter Girls event - Robyn Balmer leading the way, Louise Carney runner-up and Jessica Spilsbury third.

St Mary's took the first two places through Morgan Feeney and Nick Redmond, in the boys race, with James Mangan (St Charles) third.

The honours were more evenly spread in the Large School race with Adam Moorcroft (Booker) and Anna Rowe (Woolton) the two individual winners.
