Derby's attacking fullback, 25, signed for the Hammers in July 2006 after winning rave reviews at Preston.

But homesick Mears never settled at West Ham where he only made three Premier League starts as injury and the arrival of Lucas Neill in January 2007 saw him sidelined.

Mears also admits the hype surrounding Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez's controversial move to the club made it hard to concentrate on football.

"It's the first time that I've been back since I left so I'm really looking forward to the game," said Mears.

"It didn't work out for me there and an injury at the start of the season didn't help me and then it wasn't until October that I got back into training.

"By then, it was a crazy time at West Ham with what was happening on the pitch and off the pitch."
