The juried competition was open to students in public, private, and home schools throughout the Coastal Bend. Students submitted paintings, drawings, and photographs in which they envisioned themselves as pioneers in their own lives, their communities, and the world at large.

More than 200 entries were submitted and exhibited in the Art Museum of South Texas and the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History. The exhibit occurred in conjunction with a major exhibit of works by pioneering modernist Dorothy Dorothy

 G. Otton, executive director of the South Texas Institute for the Arts, said Visionarios was designed to encourage students to participate in the arts, which is linked to improved student achievement.

"Studies have shown that students who participate in the arts do better in school and on standardized tests A standardized test is a test administered and scored in a standard manner. The tests are designed in such a way that the "questions, conditions for administering, scoring procedures, and interpretations are consistent" [1]  and are less likely to drop out," he said. "Yet often, arts programs are among the first to be cut when education budgets are tight."
