"It's a big deal," Airport Manager Bob Noble said. "We don't currently have access to the Delta network The Delta Network, also referred to as the Delta Force (no relation to the real life Delta Force) was the name of a group of Deviants, a fictional race of beings from Marvel Comics. The Delta Network was a group of Deviant warriors who were organized by Warlord Kro. , so we lose a lot of traffic to Portland."

About 50 percent of area residents drive to Portland to hop flights, Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce President Dave Hauser said.

Those choosing to fly out of Portland are opting for convenient connections and better fares, he said. "If we can narrow that gap, we can certainly regain some of that market."

Airport officials are expecting 23,000 to 26,000 new passengers a year to depart on Delta/SkyWest's 50-seat Bombardier CRJ CRJ redirects here. For other meanings of CRJ see CRJ (disambiguation)

The new flights will connect Eugene with the Salt Lake Delta hub, allowing one-stop connections to 296 additional flights in 68 more cities.

And they will be so convenient, Noble said, that travelers taking off from Eugene will make the two-hour flight to Salt Lake before travelers making the drive to Portland park their cars and clear airport security.

Luring Delta to Eugene required about $1.2 million in public and private incentives.

The Eugene City Council offered a $400,000 reserve to protect Delta if the route fails to cover its costs.

Sixty Eugene-Springfield area businesses pledged to buy $550,000 worth of airline tickets during the first year of the service, Hauser said.

The airport is the second largest and one of the fastest growing hubs for Delta Air Lines, as well as hubs for Delta Connection
also agreed to spend a combined $225,000 to advertise the flights.

This is the third time in five years that local governments and businesses have dug deep to bring an airline to Eugene.

In 1999, Eugene-Springfield firms pledged $475,000, which helped entice America West to begin service to Phoenix.

The next year, businesses promised $462,000, which led Horizon Air to launch flights to Los Angeles.
