FlightSafety is to be the majority shareholder of the company which will require an initial investment of approximately $30 million. The joint venture agreement is awaiting final approval by the People's Republic of China Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation. The new company will provide turn-key training programs and systems utilizing new Boeing 737 and Boeing 757/767 simulators. The city of Kunming is located in southwest China Southwest China (Chinese: 西南; pinyin: Xinan) is a region of China defined by governmental bureaus that includes the municipality of Chongqing; provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou; and the Tibet Autonomous Region. and is easily accessible by all the major airlines in China. Consistent with FlightSafety's policy of locating facilities convenient to its customers, the Kunming training center will save Chinese crews significant amounts of travel time. The majority of China's airline crews currently train outside of the People's Republic of China. The facility is expected to be fully operational in the fourth quarter of 1996. As of 1994, there are 86 Boeing 737s, 41 Boeing 757s and 14 Boeing 767 aircraft operated by China's commercial air carriers. Additionally, there are currently 10 Boeing 737s, 9 Boeing 757s and 6 Boeing 767s on order.
