 may be the ultimate symbol of restless youth of the 1950s. His first film, East of Eden East of Eden is a novel by Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck, published in September 1952.

That fall, Rebel Without a Cause made Dean an icon (idol). But by then he was dead, at the age of 24. He was killed while speeding on a California road in his Porsche 550 Spyder.

Dean's legend has grown. Today, his very name, like that of Marilyn Monroe, evokes both glamour and tragedy.
