Five things you didn't know about... Joan Allen.
Joan is currently in Prague filming Mists Of Avalon, an American mini-series, which co-stars Anjelica Huston and Julianna Margulies (ER's Nurse Hathaway) as a druid princess. The swords and sorcerers drama is tipped as the most expensive film of its kind, ever.
She began her career alongside John Malkovich, Gary Sinise and John Mahoney (Frasier's dad) as one of the founder members of Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company.
Joan was Oscar-nominated two years running, in 1996 and 1997, for best supporting actress roles in Nixon and The Crucible. In 1997 she had the added distinction of being the only nominee who'd also been up for a gong the year before. "To tell you the truth, if Oliver Stone had wanted Pat Nixon to wear a G-string and swing from a chandelier, I would have played it that way," she said at the time.
In 1989, she won a Best Actress Tony, the Broadway equivalent of an Oscar, for her debut performance in New York in the play Burn This.
Joan, who is married to Peter Friedman and has a daughter, Sadie, returns to her hometown of Rochelle in Illinois each summer to hold workshops for aspiring actors and actresses.
